There is an urgent global need to develop medical countermeasures to protect populations against infectious disease pathogens used as bioterror agents. We are developing and evaluating vaccine candidates against important biodefense targets such as anthrax and plague. We are completing preclinical evaluation of a plant-made vaccine candidate, formulated for mucosal (oral) delivery with the capacity to boost anthrax-specific immune response. An effective oral vaccine could minimize the need for mass injectible immunization and offers the potential to not only eliminate the often deadly effects of anthrax infection, but also radically change military and civilian vaccination programs. Additional preclinical studies have demonstrated that anthrax and plague vaccine candidates developed and produced using the iBioLaunch™ technology induced specific immune responses and conferred complete protection against lethal doses of the pathogens. |
